Breaking All The Rules...

First things first: Being creative gives you the artistic freedom to go beyond the imagination and simply make something out of nothing. Sure, some guidance and rules might help out during the process but ultimately is up to you!

When I decided to become a Make-Up Artist, I knew that skill and practice, talent and rules apply. But that is not what motivated my ability to want to create and experiment. What mostly fascinated me with the field is that I was able to create without anyone or anything telling me how to, or why, or you can't use this with that. Sure, some key factors are essential, but in my mind, I just wanted to create and be myself. Add a little of "me" to everything I touch.

To understand "me", here is a quick glance: Ever since I can remember, I've been wanting to personalize and custom create. My Mom once bought me plain black Sketchers shoes and I would be like..."um.. so cool! but I know I can make them "cooler" ha ha Yes! In my head I always wanted to make things more sparkly and fun. So I would take my plain black shoes and begin....with nail polish! Yup, I would start painting my shoes all kinds of colors with nail polish and end the job with glitter clear coat to seal the deal. I would go to school the next day and Whoa! "Where you get those shoes? Sooo glittery and fun!" "Oh I made them myself" I would respond (super proud of course.)

It was pretty much like that with most things. I would use whatever I had to make it my own. When it seemed like everyone had everything they ever wanted because they were able to afford it, I had stuff no one had because I had transformed it to something new and unique I was able to call it my own. I might of not had the latest fashion or toy or gadgets, but I did have Michelle's limited edition creations! Who would of known that I had something special to offer later on in life, something that would be my pleasure to share and to give...my creativity...my talent to create.

Advice to live by: Create art by breaking all the rules. In Make-Up Artistry we go by a book saying where you put the highlight, where to put the contour, where to apply the shadow. Yes, if you follow the basic guidelines and add a little flair (and talent), you'll end up with a classic, flawless look that will never go out of style. BUT..(yes, a big but) We also need to bend and break some of these common rules. How do we expect to excel or think outside the box if we're just creating  cookie-cutter styles over and over?

Use different color palettes, use your eye shadows in other places besides the eyes. Lipsticks double as blushes, mix foundation with a favorite moisturizer to create a subtle dewy look. The possibilities are endless and if we limit ourselves with "rules" and restrictions, well...the outcome might be right but it wouldn't be that special and unique. Why? because we didn't add our own personal touch and we didn't make any real mistakes (to learn from) along the way.

Mistakes make and create great things! If I wouldn't of made so many mistakes when applying make-up...I would have never known how to do it in a different way or how to work myself around what I didn't like. Also, I would have missed out on new techniques or a shortcut to a difficult task. For example: When I need to clean up hard to remove eyeliner, mascara or even eyeshadow, I would usually look for my handy dandy make-up remover or q-tip with water. Well sometimes I had no make-up remover that was gentle enough, and plain old water...well it wouldn't work. So one day I applied eye drops (Visine to remove unwanted redness and irritation) to my made up eyes and some of it was too runny it sort of made a mess. I was kind of upset but I also discovered that it cleaned off hard to remove make-up around the eye area, and it was gentle enough to use around my eyes! So after that, I always use Visine with a q-tip for a quick clean up around the eye (and for "foiling" a trick with eye shadows for a "foiled" look). I might have not invented that but I sure did find a new, easy way, instead of always obsessing over make-up remover (that in my opinion hurts my delicate eyes!)

I hope I got my point across, even though there is no real point into creating art regardless if it's Make-Up application, fashion sense, drawing and painting or music. Having and using our artistic freedom allows us to discover and create things that are truly unique and allows us to tell a story. Whatever the reason behind that story, it will be something you can call your very own. And nothing else feels better than saying I'm presenting to you.. ME! This is my talent and this is what I can do, and it's one of a kind!
